Ocracoke Island is the place to go to get away from it all. Accessible only by ferry (contact 800-BY-FERRY for information on routes and schedules), private boat or private plane, the trip here is an adventure in itself! Ocracoke is the southern most inhabited island on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The island boasts more than sixteen miles of beautiful beach front. There are no houses on our beaches; they are wild, natural and pristine. Almost all of the island is under the management of the National Park Service.
The Village of Ocracoke is located at the southern tip of the island. This is where you will find us! All of the houses, shops, and restaurants are located in this area making it easy to leave the car behind or to walk or bike almost anywhere you need to go.
Close proximity to the Gulf Stream (and our warm water) make for enjoyable swimming and some great fishing. There are charter boats for hire on Ocracoke for inshore or offshore fishing trips. Or, just grab a surf rod and fish from the beach. Scotch Bonnet shells and sand dollars are plentiful on our beach, too.
Rich with history, Ocracoke has many famous attributes. Ocracoke’s lighthouse is one of the oldest lighthouses still in operation on the East Coast. This is also where the infamous pirate Blackbeard lost his head. Many wonder if this is where he buried his treasure. Ocracoke is also home to the British Cemetery; a plot of land where several British sailors were buried after their bodies washed ashore here during World War II.
There are guided kayak tours and surf lessons. There are nature trails to explore or you could find a hammock to nap in. There are good restaurants as well as plenty of groceries and provisions for your own BBQ. You may choose to stay in a motel or stay in a weekly rental cottage. There are even campgrounds if you want to “rough it”.
Come discover the magic of Ocracoke for yourself…
